MEET THE ARTIST

Hi! I'm Mariel ... I have been playing in clay as long as I can remember. The story started in Georgia, as soon as I could crawl I headed for that infamous red clay. I vividly recall elementary school recesses spent digging up the sand box just to get down to the red clay so I could "make stuff". My middle school years I learned all about Fimo clay and tiny sculptures, then high school hit. I came to know things about clay, pottery, and myself that would change my future in ways I never dreamt possible. Now, many years later I have turned my passion into a shareable wearable art form and so much more. The decision to launch into a business was fueled by a significant change in my health and wanting to leave a mark on this world. Post divorce, and many other life changes I am still learning how to navigate life in order to be the best version of myself. Every other week my children would leave for their dad's house, and I found myself very lonely and dreading doctor appointment results. Pottery and the business became a friend, a distraction ... a way to bring others around me joy! I love every part of the process from dreaming up new designs; opening the kiln (and at times finding the shattered remains of something that was going to be epic); seeing the happy faces of those wearing what I have created with my very own hands or dreamt up in my mind. One of my collections is made up of antique handmade doilies imprinted into clay and formed into necklace pendants. Each one is totally unique and no two are alike. Another collection is Sweet Love, made up of some wooden and ceramic collaborations. Everyday I continue to grown, learn, and remain ever grateful for all of the love and support that surrounds Surmount each and every day.

Thank you for stopping by SURMOUNT!!
